Conceptual Works
Contemporary artists’ books started in the 1950s and 1960s with the conceptual works of Dieter Roth and Ed Ruscha. Conceived as works of art, they provided a place to communicate ideas or a space for experimentation. They were often self-published inexpensively with the intention of wide distribution to the public.
